Our day-to-day lives just don't have enough minutes in every hour, taking care of our self gets crammed in between activities or worse yet pushed down on the to-do list. Long gone are the reminders of "wait an hour after eating before taking a swim." I routinely hear about the amazing spin class or hours on the treadmill that will follow an acupuncture treatment, and I cringe. In today's culture, we eat or drink and talk on the phone while doing almost any activity from driving, riding, walking, running, reading to typing. When all the needles are removed and the acupuncture treatment is over heading back to the hectic schedule isn't the best option. As luxurious as it is, I don't expect anyone to be able to carve out several hours of a day to allow a treatment to infuse recalibrate. A tidbit of information that acupuncture is activating on a cellular vibrational level returning the body to healthy resonance should cause one to pause. I am assuming anyone with a meditation practice is not immediately physically active and thinking 50 things simultaneously when they open their eyes, nor should one allow for that following an acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture is not a medical procedure nor does it need bedrest or inactivity. Anything that is altered and introduced to the body needs assimilation and space and time.

Energy is subtle and easily influenced. It comprised of vibrations. Acupuncture is all about energy. The yang energy, the yin energy, the energy of each of the organs, and it is all being redirected and redistributed with the insertion and retention of the needles. Sometimes energy is on the surface and needs to be directed deeper, sometimes it is all up top and needs to be grounded, and sometimes it is too heavy or coarse and needs to be lifted or smoothed. Try the sensation on for an hour, like a new jacket it has contour and sensations. How does it feel, where do you feel it, how is it different from when you walked into the treatment room. Feel the calm and as we sometimes call it "qi stoned." Let your body resonate with it, put it into muscle memory. When you find yourself in really stressful moments in your days that follow a treatment, recall that sensation of calm then your body remembers and you feel the calm again taking the edge off the stress of the moment. If you hop off the treatment table, pay, reschedule, walk across the hall to the gym, find a machine and start moving; you've ignored all the work your body did in the last hour as well as potentially undoing that work. The energy of those around you, the music, the activity you are expending the energy on that was just rebalanced are all influencing what you accomplished.
